TMJ symptoms that are the most common, include: Headaches, Earaches, Neck and/or shoulder pain, Jaw pain, When opening or closing your mouth, you can hear a popping, clicking, or grating sound in the jaw joint, Facial pain, Jaws locking, Difficulty opening your mouth.
Sometimes minor symptoms related to TMJ might go away on its own. When any of the following symptoms are present, it is recommended to make an appointment with a doctor, dentist or TMJ specialist to avoid it getting worse: tenderness in or around the ear which is constant or coming and going, discomfort in the jaw joint when chewing, jaw pain, facial pain, headaches and/or migraines, ringing in the ear.
TMJ disorder can be a dental problem by nature, especially when it is related to a persons teeth. Other conditions, for ex. arthritis, can be the cause for TMJ as well. TMJ disorders can be a dental problem as well as a medical problem.
Trauma or injury to the jaw can be the cause for TMJ. But poor posture, vitamin D deficiency, dehydration, and a change in hormone levels can also contribute to the cause of TMJ.
When you leave TMJ untreated it can get worse. It can trigger tinnitus, a (constant) ringing in the ears, you can loose concentration and make it difficult to get a good nights sleep. Your inner ears contain your sense of balance. When the inflammation caused by TMJ is affecting your ears, it can impact your balance, cause dizziness and vertigo.
