Frequently Asked Questions
The Canadian Dental Association recommends that a child's first dental visit should occur within 6 months of the first tooth appearing, or by age one. Early visits help establish a dental home, allow us to monitor development, and get your child comfortable with the dental environment.
We recommend dental check-ups and cleanings every 6 months for most children. Some children with higher risk for cavities may need more frequent visits. Regular visits help us catch and treat problems early before they become bigger issues.
Yes. Modern digital X-rays use very low levels of radiation, significantly less than traditional film X-rays. We only take X-rays when clinically necessary, and we use protective lead aprons and thyroid collars for every child.
Yes. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent cavities. Professional fluoride treatments at the dental office and fluoride toothpaste are both safe and effective when used as recommended. We tailor fluoride recommendations based on your child's individual risk level.
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars). They fill in the deep grooves where food and bacteria can get trapped, preventing cavities. Sealants are highly recommended for children once their permanent molars come in, typically around ages 6 and 12.
Thumb sucking is normal in infants and toddlers. Most children stop on their own between ages 2 and 4. If thumb sucking continues beyond age 4 or when permanent teeth start coming in, it can affect the alignment of teeth and jaw development. We can discuss strategies to help your child break the habit.
If it is a baby tooth, do not try to reinsert it. Clean the area gently, apply cold compress for swelling, and call us immediately. If it is a permanent tooth, handle it by the crown (not the root), rinse gently with milk or saline, try to reinsert it, or keep it in milk, and get to our office within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss once daily, limit sugary snacks and drinks, ensure regular dental check-ups, and consider dental sealants for molars. Establishing good habits early sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy teeth.
Children under 6 need an adult to brush their teeth for them or closely supervise. Between ages 6 and 8, children can begin brushing on their own with supervision. By age 8 or 9, most children have the dexterity to brush effectively on their own, but occasional checks are still a good idea.
The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Not every child will need braces, but early assessment allows us to identify issues like crowding, crossbites, or jaw growth problems and intervene at the ideal time. We offer both Invisalign and traditional braces.
Dental anxiety in children is very common. Our team is experienced in working with anxious children using a gentle, patient approach. We explain everything in child-friendly language, allow kids to explore the tools, and offer sedation options for children who need extra support.
Yes. For children who experience significant anxiety or who need extensive treatment, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation. It is safe, gentle, and wears off quickly after the appointment.
With proper care, porcelain veneers typically last 10-15 years or longer. They are stain-resistant and crafted from durable dental ceramic that mimics the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene are key to maximizing their lifespan.
Yes, professional teeth whitening supervised by a dentist is safe for your enamel. We use clinically tested products at carefully controlled concentrations. Unlike over-the-counter products, professional whitening is monitored to prevent sensitivity and deliver even, predictable results up to 8 shades brighter.
Absolutely. Composite bonding is an excellent, affordable option for closing small gaps, repairing chips, and improving tooth shape. The procedure is typically completed in a single visit with no anesthesia required, and results look completely natural.
