Frequently Asked Questions
The Canadian Dental Association recommends a child's first dental visit by age one, or within six months of their first tooth appearing. These early visits are short and gentle — they let us check that teeth are coming in properly and help your child feel comfortable at the dentist from the start.
Yes. We direct-bill the Canada Dental Care Plan for eligible family members, including children and seniors, so you don't have to pay up front for covered services. If you're unsure whether your family qualifies, call us at 403-254-0406 and we'll verify your coverage before your appointment.
Yes. We hold same-day emergency slots every day for patients of all ages, including children. If your child has a knocked-out tooth, severe pain, a broken tooth, or a dental injury, call us right away and we'll get them seen the same day during our business hours, including evenings and Saturdays.
Yes — we're actively welcoming new patients and their families. You can book online or call 403-254-0406. We'll ask for your insurance or CDCP details in advance so your benefits are ready when you arrive.

Yes. Millrise Dental is one LRT stop south of Shawnessy on the Red Line — about a 5-minute ride or a 7-minute drive. Many of our patients come from Shawnessy, Midnapore, and Sundance. Call us at 403-254-0406 or book online — we can usually get new patients in within the week.
Most patients benefit from a dental exam and cleaning every 6 months. Patients with a higher risk of cavities, gum disease, or other concerns may be advised to come in more frequently. Your dentist will recommend the right interval based on your individual oral health.
Yes. The radiation exposure from modern digital dental X-rays is extremely low — less than the radiation you receive from a short airplane flight. We take X-rays only as often as clinically necessary and use digital technology to minimize exposure while maximizing diagnostic accuracy.
Your exam includes a visual check of all teeth, gums, tongue, and soft tissues; a review of your X-rays; screening for cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer; an assessment of your bite and jaw; and a discussion of any concerns or treatment recommendations. A professional cleaning is typically performed at the same appointment.
The most effective cavity prevention strategies include brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, limiting sugary and acidic foods and beverages, drinking plenty of water, and attending regular professional cleanings. Dental sealants and fluoride treatments can provide additional protection, especially for children and cavity-prone patients.
Common signs include tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods, visible dark spots, or a rough texture you can feel with your tongue. However, many cavities have no symptoms at all in their early stages — which is why regular exams with digital X-rays are essential. Our team will identify any decay during your checkup and recommend the right treatment before it progresses.
A regular dental cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gumline and is performed on patients with healthy gums. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) goes further below the gumline to treat active gum disease and is more involved, often requiring local anesthesia. Your hygienist will recommend the appropriate type of cleaning based on the health of your gums.
Completely normal — many children (and plenty of adults) feel nervous. Our team is experienced at easing dental anxiety with patience, kid-friendly explanations, distraction like TV during procedures, and a calm, unhurried pace. We often speak to children in their home language, which helps them feel understood and safe.
It's mostly a gentle 'get to know you' visit. We count and examine your child's teeth, check that everything is developing normally, and — where age and comfort allow — do a light cleaning and fluoride. We'll also coach you on brushing, teething, and nutrition at home. The focus is on making it a positive experience, not rushing into treatment.
