Frequently Asked Questions
Braces are used primarily to treat malocclusion or a bad bite in patients that may have crooked or crowded teeth and also when the upper and lower teeth do not fit together properly. Most people choose orthodontic treatment to get that beautiful, aligned smile, but braces actually offer more benefits than just a perfectly straight smile.
Orthodontic treatment has advanced over the past few decades. Today, there are a variety of treatment options you can choose from. Here are a few options that teenagers and adults tend to choose between: Coloured Braces - You’ve embraced the fact that braces will be part of your life for the next couple of years. Why not have a little fun with them by adding some colour? Invisalign Clear Aligners - Invisalign helps to straighten your teeth with a series of clear, customized, removable appliances called aligners - without wires or brackets.
Yes. Orthodontic problems are often easier to correct when they are detected and treated early. For this reason, the Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children should visit the orthodontist for the first time by the age 7. Some children may not need treatment until they are between the ages of 11 and 13, but since the first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in around age 7, issues like crossbites, crowding, and other problems can be evaluated and monitored at this early age.
Yes. We offer braces and other orthodontic treatment options geared to the specific needs of teenagers and their growing smiles.
Yes. Orthodontic treatment has no age limit! In fact, more adults than ever before are getting orthodontic treatment. We routinely treat adults and even seniors. The basic biological process that allows teeth to move is essentially the same in all healthy individuals, no matter their age.
Orthodontic treatment can take anywhere from 9 months to 5 years from start to finish. Most of the time, though, it lasts between 12 and 24 months. The duration depends on the problem being corrected, if you’ve had Phase I treatment, and how you care for your teeth and braces during treatment.
An individual patient's needs will factor into the cost of orthodontic care. There is no standard fee for every patient. During your comprehensive orthodontic examination, our orthodontists will assess your treatment needs and quote a fee that's relevant to you or your child's treatment requirements and plan.
For the most part, your braces may have little to no impact on your daily life. Once your teeth and mouth have adapted to your braces (they may feel a bit sensitive and tender at first), you should be able to go right back to your usual daily activities without any significant disruptions.
With braces, you’ll be able to safely and comfortably eat most of the foods you normally do, with some exceptions. For the most part, you’ll want to avoid hard foods (hard pretzels, nuts, chips, hard candy), chewy/sticky foods (gummy bears, taffy, gum, caramels), and foods that you bite into (apples, corn on the cob, celery, carrots).
With early intervention, we can offer orthodontic treatment for children as young as 7 who may have bite issues, crowded teeth or other problems. This is also sometimes referred to as 'Phase I treatment'. Because your child's jaw structure and teeth are still developing at this age, certain orthodontic problems are often easier to address.
Not all children are candidates for early orthodontic treatment; there are some cases that are best left until the child is older. Our exam process will give us the chance to determine the optimal time to begin treatment, as well as give you a chance to learn about treatment options, including braces and treatment for snoring and sleep apnea.
The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children be screened for orthodontic problems by the age of 7 years old. They may not need any treatment at that time, but early screening provides peace of mind. It can help head off difficult to treat problems later on.
Young children's skeletal structures are malleable as they continue to develop and grow. This makes it possible to change the trajectory of jaw development, potentially helping to prevent the need for surgery as your child develops.
Treatment can begin when your child still has baby teeth. During the first phase of treatment (which typically lasts up to 9 months), your child will wear a retainer until his or her permanent adult teeth emerge. After their permanent teeth have erupted, we can identify whether Phase II Treatment is needed. The majority of children will need a second phase of treatment. However, this phase can be considerably shorter and less invasive if progress is made during early Phase I treatment.
Yes! If you’re an adult, it’s not too late to correct problems such as crooked or crowded teeth, overbites, underbite, incorrect jaw position, or jaw-joint disorders with adult braces or Invisalign.
