On average, dentures continue to function for 10-12 years, depending on a patient’s oral health. It’s incorrect to assume any dentures can last a lifetime. However, you can extend their lifespan with proper routine maintenance. Also, you would have to get your dentures evaluated and adjusted regularly by a denturist. Once your dentures are worn out or damaged beyond repair, a replacement is inevitable.

Dentures are recommended when a significant number of teeth on both the lower and upper arch no longer function as they should. Many reasons can cause the loss of natural teeth, such as an accident, old age, or injury. Getting dentures can involve extracting natural teeth that have been identified as incompetent during an oral examination. The denturist discusses your needs and expectations and suggests a suitable option to provide a favourable and beneficial outcome.

A DIY quality assessment may be challenging, and the best option is to ask your denturist about the materials and technology used in denture fabrication. Having confidence in your dentures is important, as poor-quality materials are responsible for your dentures’ permanent wear and fracture.

Immediate dentures are fabricated the same day as you get your teeth extracted. However, the cost depends on whether you choose temporary or transitional dentures during your healing period.

It’s important to consistently wear your immediate dentures for at least 48 hours after tooth extraction. In certain cases, your denturist may advise you to keep your immediate dentures on for at least the first week. After this period, you’ll be able to take them out for cleaning. Overall, immediate dentures are to be worn for two to three months before being replaced by a more permanent solution.

If the patient wishes, both procedures can be done on the same day. In most cases, the mould and jaw measurements of the natural teeth are taken before extraction.
