Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD) are abnormal movement patterns of the face and mouth muscles, which interfere with normal growth, development, or function. Causes include prolonged finger or thumb sucking, prolonged use of a bottle or pacifier, upper airway obstruction, blocked nasal passages, differences in orofacial muscles and structure, and genetics.
There are no gender or age requirements. Common signs include atypical chewing and swallowing patterns, dental malocclusion, blocked nasal passages, speech problems, teeth grinding, sleep apnea, face and jaw pain, headaches. In children, signs include difficulty nursing, picky eating, drooling, poor posture, and speech issues.
Myofunctional therapy is essentially physical therapy for your mouth, working with you to build essential muscle memory.
