Dr. Steve Barkwell was born in Edmonton but spent most of his early years living on the west coast of British Columbia where he attended UBC for his post-secondary education, including Dentistry. He has been back in Alberta for over 10 years practicing dentistry surrounded by friends and family. He is proud to call Sherwood Park home. As an avid hockey player and fan, you can find Dr. Barkwell playing on multiple teams throughout the year while cheering on the Edmonton Oilers when he’s not playing. Dr. Barkwell also loves to spend his free time going on long bike rides around the river valley. When he gets extended time off, he loves to travel and adventure. From surfing his favorite lake in Montana to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest peak in Africa, Dr. Barkwell is always game to explore, try out new foods and learn more about different cultures. Sometimes he combines these passions by providing dental services in underserved countries. In his most recent volunteer dentistry trip, he went to Guatemala to provide his expertise.

Dr. J brings a strong academic background and a genuine commitment to whole‑body wellness to his dental practice. He completed both his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degrees at the University of Alberta, where he also played football for the Golden Bears. He later attended the renowned Howard University College of Dentistry (HUCD) in Washington, D.C., earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.). To further expand his clinical expertise, he completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency at Wichita State University. Since 2013, Dr. J has focused on providing gentle, patient‑centered, evidence‑based dental care. He enjoys all aspects of general dentistry and has special interests in dental implants, jaw growth and development in children, and sleep apnea treatments. Dr. J takes a holistic approach to oral health, helping patients understand how the mouth connects to overall wellness—including the important roles of nutrition, sleep, and exercise in maintaining a healthy smile. Dr. J is dedicated to creating a comfortable, welcoming experience for every patient. He believes in taking the time to listen, explain treatment options clearly, and work together to build personalized plans that support long‑term health. His calm, friendly approach helps patients of all ages feel at ease and confident in their care.

Dr. Jamal was born and raised in Edmonton, spending most of his life in the city’s southside Westbrook community. A lifelong athlete, he developed a passion for basketball at a young age and went on to play competitively at Harry Ainlay High School. He completed his Bachelor of Science at the University of Alberta before taking two years to pursue research with the Parkinson’s Clinic of Eastern Toronto. During this time, he also dedicated himself to community service by volunteering with several children’s organizations, including the Boys & Girls Club and the Zebra Child Protection Centre. He later returned to the University of Alberta to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. Outside the clinic, Dr. Jamal enjoys exploring the world and has traveled to more than 15 countries. He is passionate about film photography, fashion, and discovering great coffee shops, where you’ll often find him enjoying a good book. He also enjoys supporting local businesses and is a regular visitor at Edmonton’s farmers’ markets. Dr. Jamal is committed to providing compassionate, patient-centered care. He believes that every patient deserves to feel comfortable, informed, and confident throughout their dental experience. He encourages patients to ask questions about their treatment, oral health, or any aspect of dentistry, and takes the time to ensure they feel heard and understood. As Dr. Jamal often says, “Patients may not remember every treatment they receive, but they’ll always remember how you made them feel.
