Frequently Asked Questions
The first approach is iatrosedation, which means establishing trust. We explain that anxiety is nothing to be ashamed of and talk through procedures to give a positive experience.
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a simple and effective sedation method for shorter procedures. It gives a feeling of floating tingly warmth, makes time pass more quickly, and works as a pain reliever. It is short-acting and patients can typically go about their day after.
Oral sedation involves pills such as Ativan to help patients feel relaxed. It does not put you to sleep but lessens anxiety and can make you remember less of the procedure. Medications are administered at the clinic while monitored by staff.
IV sedation is a deeper level of sedation for very fearful patients or invasive procedures. Patients rarely remember the procedure but are still conscious. Numbing cream and laughing gas are used for needle fear. Recovery is more rapid than oral sedation.
General anesthesia puts patients to sleep for dental work, sometimes best for young children or difficult procedures. An anesthesiologist is required, and we offer this service locally at SantΓ© Surgical Centre.
Sun City Dental follows the Alberta Dental Fee guide. Most insurance companies also follow this guide, so if your insurance covers 100% of a procedure, you won't have anything extra to pay.
The answer is usually yes. Most wisdom teeth do not have enough room to come in properly and can become impacted. Risks of leaving them include cavities, infection, food entrapment, cysts, bone loss, jaw fracture, and crowding. Removal is often recommended when risks of leaving them outweigh surgery risks.
Bacteria eat sugar and produce acid, which causes decay and eventually a cavity. Foods with sugar or citric acid, and sugary drinks, can cause cavities. Cavity prevention involves diet changes, good oral hygiene, and using fluoride.
Fluoride rinse should be used at a different time than brushing, rinsing vigorously for at least 60 seconds, and not eating or drinking for 30 minutes. MI Paste can be used after brushing or fluoride rinse, either by licking a pea-sized amount or using a custom tray.
Keep the blood clot in the socket, apply pressure with gauze to stop bleeding, use ice packs to prevent swelling, avoid mouthwash for 48 hours, do not use straws, rinse with warm salt water the day after, do not smoke for 48 hours, take antibiotics as prescribed, limit physical activity, and eat soft foods.
