Frequently Asked Questions
Children should have their first dental visit by age one or within six months of getting their first tooth. Early visits help kids get used to the dental office, build rapport, create a baseline, prevent issues, and allow parents to learn how to care for their baby's smile.
Your child's dental cleaning will generally take 30–45 minutes, depending on your little one's needs.
No. Our Red Deer pediatric dental cleanings are gentle and pain-free. Plus, we use comfort techniques for nervous kids.
Yes, both are available to give kids extra cavity protection. Professional fluoride treatments strengthen kids' enamel, and protective dental sealants seal off the pits and grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth.
Our friendly, patient team is specially trained in treating children. We use kid-friendly terms, distraction, and other techniques to put children at ease. We also offer safe dental sedation options when needed.
Absolutely. Under Dr. Goshtasby and Dr. Grant’s expert care, sedation is administered with rigorous safety protocols and continuous monitoring to ensure your child’s well-being.
No. Nitrous oxide relaxes your child, but they remain awake, cooperative, and able to respond to the dental team. Because laughing gas for kids wears off quickly, most children are able to return to normal activities immediately after their appointment.
Recovery varies but is closely supervised at our surgical center. Your child will be discharged once the anesthetist confirms your child is safe to leave. Generally, we encourage patients to rest for the remainder of the day after their appointment.
For nitrous oxide, your child should not eat or drink within three hours of the appointment. For general anesthesia, you’ll receive specific fasting instructions. Generally, we ask patients not to have food or drinks from midnight the night prior to the procedure.
Common dental emergencies include severe tooth pain, knocked-out teeth, broken teeth, facial swelling, dental abscesses, uncontrolled bleeding, and injuries to the lips, tongue, or gums. If you’re unsure whether your child needs urgent treatment, call our office at (587) 324-7504.
Pick the tooth up by the crown (not the root) and gently rinse it with water. If it’s a permanent tooth, try placing it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, store it in milk and contact our office immediately. For baby teeth, do not try to place the tooth back in the socket.
Not always. Minor chips can often wait until your child’s next appointment. However, larger fractures, pain, bleeding, or sensitivity should be promptly evaluated.
Go to the emergency room immediately if your child is having trouble breathing, has uncontrolled bleeding, facial trauma, or signs of a serious infection. For toothaches, chipped teeth, knocked-out teeth, swelling, or other oral injuries, an emergency pediatric dentist is often the best place to start.
Yes. As board-certified pediatric dentists, we’re experienced in helping anxious children and those with special health care needs feel calm and supported. Dr. Gosh completed his residency at a Level 1 pediatric trauma hospital, and our dentists offer sedation options including nitrous oxide and general anesthesia when appropriate.
We reserve space in our schedule for emergency cases, and we do our best to accommodate same-day appointments whenever possible. Call our office right away, so we can assess the situation and get your child seen quickly.
